RLOD#51 (2020.09.27) 1988 Philips FNF 50W

The Accent 1200 is a range of compact tungsten-halogen lamps with an MR16 dichroic reflector that Philips introduced in North America in 1986. Two main variants of the lamps were offered: the standard white-light type for general lighting applications and the colored type for decorative purposes. Because Philips had not yet established its own production of dichroic halogen lamps, the company sourced them from Kondo Sylvania of Japan, a joint venture between Kondo Electric Industry and GTE Sylvania that existed between 1968 and 1992. Colored Accent 1200 lamps were offered in four models with a dichroic mirror finely tuned to project a narrow 10° beam of red, yellow, green or blue light. The FNF shown here is of the latter type and is characterized by the lowest peak brightness (1.8 kcd) of all colored models (13.0 kcd max) due to the limited blue content in the light emitted by its incandescent filament. Philips eventually began releasing its own MR16 halogen lamps in 1989 and opted for a front dichroic filter in order to produce more saturated light colors. The improved Philips-made colored lamps were introduced in 1990.

Another interesting one Max. So on these do you still get white light out the front directly from the filament, with just reflected light being coloured?

Yes, white light still emerges from the front and that's a weakness of such lamp design, the overall color of the light projected by the dichroic mirror is thus not as saturated as it could be. It's for this reason that when Philips began producing their own colored MR16 dichro lamps in 1990, they opted for a front-filter design instead.
